I never drove a big rig, but in indonesia, It's common for buses to have a 7-speed Dog-Leg Manual transmission. And that's cool.

I don't know exactly which part you're talking about and it's hard to say what exactly he's doing without knowing what transmission he has.. He clearly has a Hi/LO range with a splitter. The switch on the side of the stick is the splitter for splitting gears and the switch on the front of the shifter is the range selector.

The beginning he's skipping around in the shift pattern, skipping gears etc. at about 1:30 he's getting on the highway just going through the gears. It looks like when he hits the splitter, he pops it out of gear and back in, you don't really need to do that. Right at the start of the new camera angle at 1:30, he goes from low range to hi range and restarts the shift pattern.

They're not nearly as complicated as one might think. I like his knob setup!

One is the splitter, one is the range, and one is the gear lever. Most sticks have the first two as switches on the lever. At least make the splitter something on the stick, you use that a lot more often than the range selector.

Me thinks he's just showing off, doing unnecessary shifting.

You can get trucks with automatics too.

Well obviously this truck isn't an automatic. lol. But yeah, aren't most volvo trucks now automatic because it saves gas?

I'm not really sure what options Volvo offers. My view of the truck world might be a little skewed though because I've mostly dealt with 1 manufacturer. Most truck sales are fleet sales though which leads to a lot of custom orders. My impression has been that most trucks are built to order and options are a la carte (for lack of a better expression).

Why the shift lever needs to be so tall? To show that he's an idiot?

Well quite a few people who are just starting out in the business will just buy what ever they can for as cheap as they can, just so they can start working. But as far as truck knowledge goes, mine is very limited. I do have an uncle who has his own little trucking company though.

gotcha. I've seen the option books before and auto is always an up charge. It has nothing to do with volume* because the autos are simply more expensive. There's only so many suppliers available anyway. Allison is the biggest player, Eaton makes an auto ultrashift, CAT has an automatic transmission that's for heavy duty and severe service, and supposedly Ford is trying to get into medium duty (the gas 650/750 has a Ford automatic). I'm not sure if you can get Ford's trans in any truck that doesn't have a Ford engine though since I don't think it has an SAE 3 bell housing.

*Car manufacturers go auto only for a number of reasons one being that if they only have to design to 1 transmission it makes production cheaper. This is especially true since they will likely have to offer an auto anyway. Also, they can leverage their transmission supplier (if the trans is not an internal design) with a larger order if they have only 1 transmission to order. If it's an internal design, there is usually a cost save associated with higher volume.
